ABOUT

The Darkroom@Engine is a program o Engine, a 501(c)3 entity.

The Darkoom @ Engine is a community black and white darkroom space resident on the 2nd floor of Engine’s current home at 163 Main.

The Darkroom @ Engine was originally Noc Darkroom, started by Tina (Guay) Johnson in 2016 in the basement of Engine’s former location at 128 Main Street in Biddeford. Noc Darkroom was adopted by Engine in 2018 as a program to provide more support for the space.

The Darkroom at Engine is a community darkroom; a place where people can learn and practice the art of film photography. Our doors in Biddeford, Maine are open to all who are interested in film, no matter how skilled or experienced you are. Enroll in a class, become a member, or reach out to learn more. Together we can KEEP FILM ALIVE.

What’s included in your membership:

  • Sessions are classified as three (3) runs of developing film and (1) full printing session.
  • Your membership includes four (4) sessions a month.
  • Members must complete a one-time Introduction to the Darkroom or have permission from our darkroom manager.
  • Sessions are reserved by emailing our darkroom manager Tina Johnson: darkroom@feedtheengine.org
  • Members can add additional working sessions.

Intro To The Darkroom: $65

This is a two-step introduction process to our space that we require all prospective members to go through unless you have prior proof of experience.

First: we will teach you the essentials to developing your own roll of film. This is to show you how things should be done (where the equipment is, how to turn the water on & off, use chemistry for film processing, etc.) and to help you get acclimated with our space.

Second: we will teach you how to develop and create prints with your film step by step. We will show you how to operate the enlargers, use our various filters, and other essential skills to the printing process that will help you create the best possible photograph.

Extra Session for Members: $20

For members who want extra time in the darkroom not included in their membership, you can purchase a single session individually.

We will be introducing some physically-distanced workshops in the very near future. Follow our Darkroom @ Engine Eventbrite page to receive updates.

Darkroom Manager Tina Johnson

Tina Johnson graduated from Biddeford Highschool in 2008, Johnson studied photography at the New Hampshire Institute of Art with her major focus in black in white film. As a component of Engine, Tina Johnson opened NOC in 2015 as an avenue to pursue her lifelong passion for photography.

The opportunities to share her knowledge, inspire other artists and help grow and develop the creating community are what brought her back to Biddeford. Aside from her time at the darkroom, Johnson continues to pursue her path as a fine artist and enjoys surfing and riding her bike. She lives in Eliot, Maine with her husband Sammy.
