The Darkoom @ Engine is a community black and white darkroom space resident on the 2nd floor of Engine’s current home at 163 Main.
The Darkroom @ Engine was originally Noc Darkroom, started by Tina (Guay) Johnson in 2016 in the basement of Engine’s former location at 128 Main Street in Biddeford. Noc Darkroom was adopted by Engine in 2018 as a program to provide more support for the space.
The Darkroom at Engine is a community darkroom; a place where people can learn and practice the art of film photography. Our doors in Biddeford, Maine are open to all who are interested in film, no matter how skilled or experienced you are. Enroll in a class, become a member, or reach out to learn more. Together we can KEEP FILM ALIVE.
The Darkroom @ Engine is currently offering individual memberships with proof of competency and/or a training session required if no prior experience.
Monthly memberships are normally $79 and auto-invoiced on a recurring basis. Membership entitles you to use of darkroom but members need to bring their own film and paper. Memberships will be auto-billed at the beginning of each month and can be cancelled at any time.
Our monthly membership allows you to print and develop film on your own. We include the necessary cost of chemistry and equipment needed. For members interested in spending more time in the darkroom..just let us know and we can adjust your membership rate.
How it works: You get one working day a week to use the space
- To become a member a one-time Introduction to the Darkroom must be completed.
- Sessions are reserved on our shared Google calendar or by emailing our darkroom manager Tina Johnson: firstname.lastname@example.org
- If members want to add additional working sessions they can at a discounted rate of $15 per added session.
***Sessions are classified as one full printing session & three (3) runs of developing film***
Intro To The Darkroom: $65
This is a two-step introduction process to our space that we require all prospective members to go through unless you have prior proof of experience.
First: we will teach you the essentials to developing your own roll of film. This is to show you how things should be done (where the equipment is, how to turn the water on & off, use chemistry for film processing, etc.) and to help you get acclimated with our space.
Second: we will teach you how to develop and create prints with your film step by step. We will show you how to operate the enlargers, use our various filters, and other essential skills to the printing process that will help you create the best possible photograph.
We will be introducing some physically-distanced workshops in the very near future. Follow our Darkroom @ Engine Eventbrite page to receive updates.
