PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

Ali Kenner Brodsky makes gesturally rich and emotionally driven dance-theater works and dance films that ask the viewer to indulge in a world of reflection, remembering, and connection. Ali was recently accepted into NEFA’S Regional Dance Development Initiative, and was a 2019 artist-in-residence (Croft: Ground for Art), 2018/19 Catalysts artist (Dance Complex), 2016 Emerging Choreographer in Residence (Bates Dance Festival), 2014 recipient of the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Choreography Fellowship, and a 2003/04 artist-in-residence at Joyce SoHo. She has received support from NEFA’s New England States Touring and Dance Fund, and from the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County. 

With David Henry, Lila Hurwitz and Andy Russ, Ali co-founded Motion State Arts, which presents innovative dance-films and live performances from local, national and international artists. She is on the Board of New England Presenters, which provides leadership and support for the presentation/development of the NE performing arts. She also works as a dance advisor and curator to the Zeiterion Theater in New Bedford, MA. Ali has designed award-winning choreography for The Wilbury Theater Group (Providence), and worked as a rehearsal director/dancer with the national touring company Lostwax Multimedia Dance (2012–15). She graduated with honors in dance from Skidmore College. A Rhode Island native, AKB makes home in Dartmouth, MA with her husband, two children and five chickens.

Filmed on Wampanoag land, between silences (2018) is a dance film based on a live, emotionally charged solo, the most depressing piece. There is a richness in isolation as trauma is relayed through the body and in conversation with her surroundings. between silences portrays one woman’s  journey through grief as she investigates how to love, to lose, to grieve, and to pick up the pieces.

Tori Lawrence Bio

Tori Lawrence is a New England-based choreographer who creates site-specific multimedia performances and digital/analog dance films. Her environmentally-based work inspires an imaginative and sustainable way of looking at, thinking about, and using space. She has taught at Smith College, Bennington College, University of Kansas, and was the 2019-20 Artist-in-Residence at Middlebury College. She has also been a guest artist at Franklin & Marshall College, Connecticut College, Drexel University, and Wilson College. She has recently been awarded artist residencies from Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder (Trondheim, Norway) and USF Verftet (Bergen, Norway), where she’ll create a new screendance project in 2022-23. Other fellowships/residencies include: Yaddo, Djerassi, Playa, Ucross Foundation, Charlotte Street Foundation, Dance Ireland, and Budapest’s Workshop Foundation. Her work has been presented by the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia Dance Projects, Movement Research, Chez Bushwick, Triskelion, Counterpulse, Space 124, Fresh Festival, Bodies in Motion Festival, Dance Films Association, and SCDT, among others. She’s currently collaborating with San Francisco-based choreographer Sara Shelton Mann on a new analog film installation “7 Excavations.” The finished work will premiere at Fort Mason in San Francisco in June 2022. Liz Mulkey Bio

Liz(zy) Mulkey is a freelance movement artist and teacher who splits her time between Los Angeles and Maine. Her work as an actress and career as a fitness and somatic teacher drew her to artistically investigate how stories are held and echoed through the body, breath, and voice. She presents her original choreography as live performance, film, and photography. Her work has been performed in theaters, art galleries, community art-walks, pop-up shows, beaches, sculpture parks, shopping centers, and studio showings.

Concept:

“Watch us enter our minds. Watch us live with the knowledge of our minds.” 

MIND is a conceptual dance film brought about by the creative partnership of Kelsie Steil (choreography, concept) and Max Auger (dir. of photography). The project was filmed in Maine and features Maine dance artists. The film explores the fearful and intense process of exploring the depths of one’s mind. The core truths of the self, as well as the echoes of energy surrounding any major event or trauma, take form as the Mr. Mind character.

Jenny Stulberg is a Los Angeles-based dance artist, filmmaker, and educator inspired by the symbiotic relationship between dance and film. Drawn to the intimacy and movement within both mediums, her work aims to highlight the idiosyncratic beauty of what it means to be human.

In 2014, Jenny co-founded Simpson/Stulberg Collaborations, a San Francisco-based performance company, with Lauren Simpson. Their work was nominated for two Izzie Awards in 2016 and were artists in residence at CounterPulse Theater, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, and the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company’s CHIME Program.

Jenny’s films have earned screenings at several international festivals including The San Francisco Dance Film Festival, ADF International Screendance Festival, and Dance Camera West, to name a few. She is an adjunct professor in the LEAP Program at St. Mary’s College and teaches screendance workshops across the country. Jenny holds an MFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and BFA from Western Michigan University.

SYNOPSIS 
 
hold ( S T I L L ) .  is the first dance-film in Simpson/Stulberg Collaboration’s collection ‘Still Life Dances’ -a series of movement studies based on still life paintings from the de Young Museum in San Francisco, CA. These dances are inspired by the composition and detail of early American artworks. This film expands upon Simpson/Stulberg’s signature style, characterized by speed, attention to detail, and careful composition. Set outdoors in the Marin Headlands of Northern California, hold ( S T I L L ) . marks a transition from SSC’s interest in the precise arrangement and intimacy of objects in still life paintings, to the natural, wild setting and vastness of a landscape painting.

Subcircle creates interdisciplinary performance that imagines alternative ways of existing in the world, placing emphasis on authenticity and sustainable collaboration. This trio, comprised of an installation artist – video and sound designer (Jorge Cousineau), and two performers/choreographers (Niki Cousineau + Scott McPheeters) share a love of urban decay, surrealism, and improvisation. They construct imaginary worlds both from the inside out and outside in; at times following impulse and desire in the rehearsal room to unearth subconscious, shared questions, and sometimes beginning with a concrete idea and developing scores based on investigative research. In a society that privileges normalcy and capitalist systems, they choose a more radical existence that celebrates and promotes the authentic body.
THINE EYES (2013)
 
Thine Eyes as filmed in the Marble Block, a space loaded with history as it once housed a former vaudeville theater, Boxing ring, Chinese food restaurant and Reny’s department store.  A continuation of the company’s exploration of how space holds memory, the film was shown in conjunction with a live performance component in Building 13 of the Pepperell Mills Campus before the site was renovated and carved into the many businesses that exist there now.

Marlon Taylor Wiles Bio

Born in Houston, TX, Marlon studied at the Margo Marshall School of Ballet, Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and the Boston Conservatory. He then toured the world with ArmitageGone! Dance and was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch”. Marlon danced in videos for Beyoncé, Madonna, Evian’s viral commercial “Baby and Me” and appeared in Elle Italia, i-D Magazine and Chobani’s oat milk campaign. In 2014, Marlon founded Flying Under The Radar, a creative consultancy for experiential/creative direction. FUTR has worked with BBC UK, CFDA, Cole Haan, Theory, Esprit, NY luxury developments by Rafael Vinoly and Sir David Adjaye and the launch of the 300-foot screen at One Times Square. Marlon has also had the privilege of performing at the Whitney Museum alongside experimental musician Jamire Williams. In 2019, Marlon became an adjunct professor at Hunter College and created a course called Tech and Tech (Technique and Technology).

Day 276 Synopsis

It is day 276 on the American Space Shuttle FUTR. We get a rare glimpse of a day in the life of Astronaut Zui Gomez. But today isn’t like the other 275 days. Zui is ready for a change in her mundane duties. She longs for excitement but today she may get into more trouble than she bargained for.
