Woven Together

Please join Engine for the opening of Woven Together on Friday September 18th, from 5:30-7:30pm. Woven Together explores the works of six contemporary Maine fiber artists whose work exemplifies a high quality of craft in their field. Artists featured include Asherah Cinnamon, Ashley Page, Gabrielle Brown, Hannah Adams, Meg Hahn, and Victoria Marsh. The exhibition is funded in part by a grant from the Maine Bicentennial Commission and will run through October 15th. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday 1pm-6pm and Saturdays 11am-2pm. A maximum of six people will be allowed into the gallery at a time and masks are required. Woven Together was curated by Kaitlin Thibeau.

The exhibition also presents a historical look at the crucial role women have played in launching one of Maine’s largest industries. Woven Together presents an open, airy, and light atmosphere, invites conversation and contemplates positive change. Moving away from traditional utilitarian textiles, Woven Together embraces contemporary textile and weaving practices which exemplify the individual voice of each artist. The artists featured in Woven Together use the utilitarian skill of weaving to construct a voice that is both political and social. Woven Together covers a breadth of topics from African American image, intellect, and spirit; the relationship of women with their bodies, with agriculture and with the natural world; feminist theories of softness, genocide, and oppression of Native Peoples; and defining home. In Maine’s bicentennial year, we explore the complexity of our relationship to Maine’s past and present by acknowledging our State’s nuanced history. Woven Together offers a space where past and present are encompassed in the quotidian material of textiles and fiber arts.
